B Impact Assessment: Community
Written by MarketingEvery business on the planet exists within a community. That’s why B Corps are committed to giving back, and why one of the five areas of the B Impact Assessment is Community.
“The Community Impact Area evaluates your company’s contribution to the economic and social well-being of the communities in which it operates, through topics such as diversity and inclusion, job creation, civic engagement and philanthropy, supply chain management, and more.”
This section of the assessment focuses on a company’s impact business model. This includes a series of questions about workplace practices in terms of diversity, equity, and inclusion. It also examines what kind of giving the company does to create a material, positive impact on the community. Giving includes any financial contributions, volunteerism, policy advocacy, and vetting and sustainability of their supply chain.
Here at MASECO, we ensure we are giving back and contributing positively to the community through our support of local charities and our wider charitable initiatives. Our communities make us who we are. That’s why we’re committed to giving back whenever we can.
For the past four years, MASECO has been the lead sponsor of a softball league and has organised and hosted charity softball tournaments. Last year, we supported a charity event in aid of and in partnership with LondonSports, co-sponsored by seven other firms.
The tournament raised thousands for LondonSports and MASECO also donated to the league for general running expenses and to buy equipment. We strongly believe that in the age of technology, it is important that children have the opportunity to be outside in the fresh air and to participate in a team-based sport.
Furthermore, considering the horrific events unfolding in Ukraine, we all want to help as much as we can. Estimates suggest more than 1.5 million people have fled their homes to escape the conflict. Heavy fighting, shelling and airstrikes across the country have had devastating consequences for ordinary people. Homes have been destroyed. Families have been separated. Lives have been lost.
At Ukraine’s borders with Poland, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Moldova huge numbers of people are arriving with only the clothes on their back and what they can carry. They need shelter, food, and water.
Until the end of June, every time a new household joins MASECO we will donate towards the Ukraine humanitarian appeal directed by DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee). £30 provides essential hygiene supplies for three people for one month; £100 could provide emergency food for two families for one month. Importantly, the UK government will match pound-for-pound (up to £20m) donated to this appeal. We have also pledged to match employee contributions to Ukraine focused charities.
We also donate to local charities and fundraisers such as One Tree Planted and many other good causes. We are always looking for new ways to use our business as a force for good, and we hope to demonstrate our commitment to giving back to the community.
