Recognising Global Recycling Day

“We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.”– Native American Proverb [6]

Today marks Global Recycling Day, a day created in 2018 to help recognise, and celebrate, the important role that recycling plays in preserving the future of our planet. Collectively and individually, this is a day for us to consider our habits and put the planet first.

As set out by the Global Recycling Foundation, the mission of Global Recycling Day is firstly to convey to world leaders that recycling is simply too important not to be a global issue, and that a common, joined up approach to recycling is urgently needed. The second objective of the day is to ask individuals across the planet to think resourcefully, not wastefully, when it comes to the goods around us – until this happens, we simply won’t award recycled goods the true value and repurpose they deserve.[1]

For us all, our disposability culture is a crucial part of the circular economy, helping to protect our natural resources. From printing to single use water bottles – we must take opportunities to change our habitual behaviours, for our generation and generations to come.

The UK generated 221.0 million tonnes of total waste in 2016, with England being responsible for 85% of the UK total.[2]

Over the last two decades, the household waste recycling rate in England has increased significantly from just 11.2% to almost 50%.[3]

This year the theme recognises people, places and activities in order to showcase the important role that recycling plays in contributing to an environmentally stable planet, and a greener future, which benefits us all. #RecyclingHeroes

At MASECO, we take responsibility for the impact of our operations by choosing more environmentally friendly approaches and those that help make our community a better place. We are always looking for new ways to use our business as a force for good. MASECO were the first UK financial services company to become B Corp Certified, a certification process that goes beyond looking at just our products but instead the entire company, and the impact of our workforce, suppliers, community and the environment.

In doing so, we take recycling very seriously and with the help of First Mile, the recycling specialists, we are working our way towards a more sustainable MASECO future. In the year leading up to the COVID-19 pandemic (2019), we recycled up to 52% of our waste. Separately, we worked with a confidential shredding company who securely shred and recycle our paper waste. By doing this we have calculated that we have saved over sixty trees.

How can we best put this into perspective? The dashboard below should help to show how every little activity is making a difference[4]:

However, it is not just about what we do in the ‘now’. We all need to take stock of our long-term behaviours and make them ongoing habits. It is time for us all to be #RecyclingHeroes.

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”– Albert Einstein[5]
