A Message from our Founders

At the heart of our mission lies the delicate balance between fulfilling today’s needs and safeguarding tomorrow’s possibilities. Our approach is rooted in the belief that the well-being of future generations depends on our planet’s enduring health and the prudent use of its resources.

As a forward-looking business, our goal is to generate sustainable growth and deliver stakeholder value, while upholding our environmental and social responsibilities. We feel passionately about championing business practices that limit negative impacts and amplify positive effects on society at large.

We are committed to conserving our precious resources to protect the environment. Our goal is to reduce pollution, waste and emissions, whilst promoting responsible energy and water use, and supporting the global movement for planetary preservation. Sustainability is a top priority in 2024, showcased by our new BREAM® office which is WELL™ Gold certified and features a green roof that fosters biodiversity in the heart of the city.

Socially, our commitment extends to fostering an inclusive society that caters to the well-being of every individual, ensuring access to essentials and championing diversity and equal opportunities.
The year 2023 marked strides in several areas at MASECO. Our team embraced International Happiness week, providing breakfast and lunch for all staff members, as well as massages for staff members in the office. Our promotion of key environmental awareness days reflected our ongoing commitment to eco-consciousness.

We take pride in our accomplishments as a certified B Corporation® over the past year and eagerly anticipate furthering our commitment in 2024.

While there remains much to be done, MASECO is unwavering in its pursuit to engender a beneficial impact on both society and the natural world.

Being a B Corp

At MASECO we are proud to be a founding member of the UK B Corporation® movement. We believe in business as a force for good, and our commitment to social responsibility is evident in everything we do.

We ensure that the growth of our business benefits not just our team or our owners, but also the wider world. We make donations to our supported organisations every time we take on a new family, and we are constantly seeking ways to reduce our environmental footprint.

We also support other ‘positive change’ companies through our choice of suppliers, and we engage our team in support of the community in which we work and live. By doing this, we hope to make a positive impact on the world around us.

Our approach to sustainability is supported by looking after our workers, clients, governance, community and environment.

We recognise that our business has an impact on all these areas, and we are committed to minimising any negative impact as well as maximising the positive.

Reasoning behind our B Corp

“We wanted to become a B Corp because we wanted our values to shine through in what we did every day as opposed to just in our personal lives. It was also a signal to our employees, clients and industry peers that we strive to manage and operate our business in an ethical and sustainable manner which is at the heart of what we do. This also influenced the way we support charities, as well as the way we invest, all while promoting the standards of accountability that being a B Corp member represents. For example, whenever we take on a new client, we make charitable donations to help feed orphans in Africa, buy mosquito nets for people in at-risk areas and help inoculate people from river blindness and other diseases. We also support local charities such as LondonSports, which are detailed in this report. Before becoming a B-Corp in 2003, we were already big believers in the philosophy of doing well by doing good. Rather than saying, ‘we should become a B Corp because it seems the right thing to do,’ we said, ‘we are already aligned with these values, this is who we are, and it makes sense that we are a part of the movement and use our business to promote these values both internally and externally.”

Governance

“Steering

At MASECO we have a dedicated B Corp Impact Steering Team which comprises of committed individuals from across business functions who provide oversight and guidance on our B Corp and impact programme and initiatives. The team acts as a centre of excellence and mobilises all departments to play their part in the impact programme. The group meets monthly.

The team is supported by MASECO B Corp representatives, who are a trusted group representing a cross-section of business sectors. They meet monthly to support the leadership team with initiatives.
Additionally, MASECO has two further committed teams who raise awareness of delivering positive change and also support in driving culture focused initiatives.

The Culture Committee Team meets monthly and the Awareness Team, which consists of Marketing, Human Resources, the Culture Committee and B Corp representatives, meets quarterly to discuss upcoming awareness days, with Human Resources underpinning all activities at MASECO.

Workers

Sustainable businesses prioritise people. This involves creating fulfilling jobs, fostering a great culture, upholding human rights, and supporting employees. At MASECO, we are dedicated to continual growth and the development of our people, culture, and global impact. Our guiding principles underpin this commitment, promoting fairness and clarity in expectations for all employees.

Our ethos revolves around ‘Freshness and Fairness’, offering comprehensive support to our employees’ overall well-being – encompassing physical, financial, mental, spiritual, and family health.

In 2023, we continued to make good progress across the following areas:

  1. Recruitment and Personal Development
  2. Culture Committee
  3. Health and Wellbeing

1. Recruitment and Personal Development

In 2023, MASECO’s HR team introduced an innovative initiative of hosting frequent ‘lunch and learn’ sessions, in order to prioritise continuous learning.

Furthermore, MASECO’s HR team have continued to progress the internal mentoring programme, which fosters skill development and knowledge sharing between mentors and mentees and continues to support employee participation in industry events and relevant training for career advancement.

Externally, MASECO collaborated with the 10,000 Black Intern Programme to provide young Black individuals in the UK with vital work experience within various industries. During the summer we welcomed an intern from this programme to explore multiple departments at MASECO, enhancing their professional growth.

Additionally, since 2018, MASECO has supported the American School in London’s WorkX Programme by offering two students a practical insight into our firm’s operations. They engage with different departments and work on a project that connects their academic learning to the workplace.

2. Culture Committee

At our firm, we understand the pivotal role that a supportive and cohesive office culture plays. To champion this cause, we’ve established a robust Culture Committee. This is a dedicated team of employees drawn from various departments who gather monthly to brainstorm innovative ways to unite our colleagues.

The Culture Committee operates under the stewardship of an appointed leader, who is distinct from the senior management team. This structure is intentional to ensure that the inspiration for new programmes emanates from diverse levels within our organisation, democratising the process and enriching the cultural fabric of our workplace.

In the past year, this committee has successfully implemented over ten initiatives, which have had a meaningful impact on our staff, the environment, and the wider community. These initiatives ranged from activities that foster close-knit relationships among team members, to campaigns that increase awareness and raise funds for our chosen charitable causes.

3. Health and Wellbeing

At MASECO, we’re committed to fostering a work environment where our team members thrive both personally and professionally. Our extensive range of benefits is tailored to nurture the health and happiness of our staff. From complimentary eye exams and allowances for spectacles, to comprehensive private medical and income protection insurance.

When it comes to financial support, we understand the importance of making life outside of work easier for our team. That’s why we offer season ticket loans for commuters, a generous first-home mortgage bonus to help you onto the property ladder, and life assurance for peace of mind.

Our commitment to sharing success is reflected in our annual profit-sharing scheme, rewarding our dedicated team for their collective achievements.

In 2023, we took our commitment a step further, launching several initiatives to enrich our workplace culture. A couple of examples of these are as follows:

  • International Week of Happiness at Work (September 2023): We brightened up the workweek by providing breakfast and lunch for all team members, coupled with relaxing massages for those based in the office.
  • Staff Away Day: We indulged our staff with a Sound Healing Session, an immersive experience designed to rejuvenate the mind, body, and soul.

Environment

Safeguarding the environment is not only vital to maintaining the health of our planet, but it’s also essential for the prosperity of present and forthcoming populations. The dialogue around carbon neutrality is gaining momentum, and our efforts to diminish our carbon emissions are steadfast. Ethical considerations aside, keeping track of our consumption patterns helps us to recognise our wastage and manage our resources with greater efficacy. We’ve achieved considerable cutbacks in our consumption of paper, usage of courier services, and electricity utilisation.

Additionally, our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint is complemented by a robust recycling strategy. We use 100% recycled paper and strive to repurpose items that can serve a second life. Our recycling programme currently encompasses paper, cardboard, glass, cans, and particular plastics such as milk containers. Recycling facilities are strategically placed throughout our premises, each marked with clear signage to encourage easy participation.

Our dedication to recycling is resolute; it significantly reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and plays an important role in saving energy, curbing pollution, and reducing expenses.

In 2023, we have taken further steps to solidify our commitment to sustainability by advocating for our workforce to join the Vegetarian Pledge and endorsing the organic cultivation movement. We’ve also pioneered the use of VICE business cards, adopting greener alternatives to enhance our networking practices with an eco-conscious approach.

Our environmental initiatives represent a significant facet of our organisation’s ethos, which we showcase across our firm’s website.

Our communities are important to us, and they are stronger when we all work together. We believe in giving back and are committed to making a difference. We are proud to support organisations that positively impact the community.

As a firm, we are committed to being good corporate citizens. We encourage our employees to get involved in their local communities and offer opportunities for them to do so. We also centrally support several local and national charities.

We are proud to support several initiatives that help improve the lives of those around us. Our support of the community is not limited to sourcing locally and supporting local businesses, but also includes sponsorship and fundraising for a number of different charities, as well as volunteering days being provided to our staff.

Sponsoring and Fundraising

“Charity”

LondonSports

MASECO sponsors and fundraises for LondonSports, the UK’s largest youth baseball and softball league.

For many years we have been the lead sponsor of the league and have organised and hosted charity softball tournaments. In 2023, we hosted our 5th charity event in aid of, and in partnership with, LondonSports. This event was co-sponsored by various other firms in the US/UK ex-pat service business sector, all of whom were recruited by us as sponsors.

Over the years, the tournament has raised more than £70,000 for LondonSports and, in with the event in 2023 achieved its highest turnout to date, generating £28,000 for charity.

We try and help others where we can…

Each time a new family/household comes on board at MASECO, we make donations to causes close to our hearts. We donate to each of our three leading charities, with over £6,000 donated in 2023. These charities are as follows:

  • Msizi Africa – Each donation feeds a child for one month.
  • Action Against Malaria Foundation – Each donation buys five mosquito nets to help prevent the spread of malaria.
  • Sightsavers – In the past 70 years, Sightsavers has carried out millions of eye operations and upheld the rights of thousands of people with disabilities. And with your continued support, we can do even more.

Other Charitable Donations

Throughout the years, our unwavering commitment to social responsibility has shone brightly. We’ve consistently stepped up as a beacon of support for numerous charitable organisations by contributing both monetarily and dedicating our time to volunteer work.

On the International Day of Charity, our conscious-driven B Corp committee spearheaded a dual-purpose campaign — promoting sustainability through clothes recycling drive and simultaneously facilitating a charitable donation initiative.

We also embraced the spirit of Movember, channelling our efforts to generate funds for a worthy cause that resonates with many.

In the year 2023 alone, our collective efforts were met with resounding success as MASECO proudly amassed over £16,000 for various charities, a testament to our team’s generosity and the collective power of charitable giving.

We don’t stop there.

We try and help as many people as we can. The graph shown demonstrates our donations for the period 1 January 2023 – 31 December 2023.
