International Strategic Investment Conference – Napa Valley
On a recent trip to the US, Josh Matthew, Managing Partner at MASECO, was lucky enough to attend the International Strategic Investment Conference, held in Napa Valley at the end of May. The conference was hosted by Dimensional Fund Advisers – a research-based fund manager with in excess of $300 billion under management.
The conference was an opportunity to share the latest research and to compare best independent adviser practice in the US and Europe.
Keynote speakers included Dimensional’s founder David Booth who spoke about the firm’s guiding principles of putting the client first, competing to succeed and investing strategically based on scientific research. “We are seeking to give the best returns and the best investor experience. The alternative is second guessing the market, and if you win you don’t know whether you are smart or lucky.”
Also of particular interest was Nobel Prize winner Professor Robert Merton who looked at new ways to manage retirement. He highlighted that the size of your retirement fund was not the only risk when you retire, but that interest rates, inflation and a shortfall in income. Professor Merton showed concern about Defined Contribution schemes, which are very much the ‘normal’ pension plan and suggested that the same principles of scientific investment should be opened to everyone using derivatives to lessen the risks.
Dimensional laid on a terrific event at a beautiful vineyard in the Napa Valley, hosting an eclectic mix of investment professionals from around the world.
