National Wine Day: A unique blend of sporting passion

Today at MASECO we celebrate National Wine Day and, taking into consideration that we are an independent wealth management firm seeking to enrich the lives of our American and global clients through simplifying their multi-jurisdictional wealth management needs, we thought we would take a look at former NFL Quarterback, Drew Bledsoe’s, wine called ‘Doubleback’.

Did you know that food historians can trace wine back to 6000 BC where it was produced in Georgia? By 4500 BC wine reached Balkans and became popular among the ancient Romans and Greeks, where wine played an important role in religion.

Taking into consideration that we are an independent wealth management firm seeking to enrich the lives of our American and global clients through simplifying their multi-jurisdictional wealth management needs, we thought we would take a look at former NFL Quarterback, Drew Bledsoe’s, wine called ‘Doubleback’.

We first heard about Drew Bledsoe’s ‘Doubleback’ from Sporting Wine Club, a wine club blending the passions of sport and wine. Drew used to play as Quarterback for the New England Patriots and was a great hero of the game, eventually handing over the reins to Tom Brady due to injury.

For Drew, owning a winery has been a long-time aspiration that would allow him to combine his passion for fine wine and love of the Walla Walla Valley. In 2008, Drew launched Doubleback, an estate-focused winery with the goal of producing ultra-premium cabernet sauvignon from the Walla Walla Valley. To make this dream a reality, Drew collaborated with his childhood friend Chris Figgins of Figgins Family Wine Estates. Chris consulted on all winemaking and vineyard practices while training current winemaker, Josh McDaniels, who assumed the role in 2015. Since its first release, Doubleback Cabernet Sauvignon has received numerous accolades most recently 99 points from Robert Parker and 96 points from Decanter. The vision for Doubleback remains to be a premium wine experience completely focused on quality. The somewhat patriotically named Elizabeth Chardonnay is one of our top white wine selections.

Wine has been produced in the United States since the 1500s, with wine production undertaken in all fifty states. The United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
