Once again, the MASECO team are partaking in our annual challenge, ‘Moving for May’ in which we do our bit to raise awareness about mental health.


Acknowledging the well-documented correlation between physical activity and improved mental health, we have opted to align our objective with this crucial theme.

Our goal this year will be for us all to collectively accumulate 6,000 minutes of exercise a week (100 hours), a minute of exercise for each person lost to suicide in the UK (average in UK per year).

Suicide rates, a tragic reflection of mental health challenges, often stem from a complex interplay of factors such as social isolation, economic hardship, and psychological distress. However, there's a glimmer of hope in understanding how physical movement can positively impact mental well-being. Engaging in regular exercise not only enhances physical health but also releases endorphins, neurotransmitters that act as natural mood lifters. Beyond the biochemical effects, physical activity fosters a sense of accomplishment, social connection, and resilience against stressors. Whether it's a brisk walk, a yoga session, or a team sport, the act of moving one's body can serve as a powerful antidote to despair, offering a path towards healing and hope for those grappling with mental health struggles.

The challenge will be held via Strava, which tracks the amount of time spent exercising over the week. The MASECO Culture Committee will at the end of each week collect the data from the MASECO group and report back.

“In previous years colleagues have collectively covered long distances from different global cities such as from LA to Mexico City in May 2023. This year we wanted to tilt our focus to time spent exercising and promoting mental health benefits associated with sporting activities. It’s fantastic to see so many colleagues getting involved.”
